Dining with a Diva: "Bitch is the New Black" Official Launch Party
Helena and me at her launch party at Room & Board
Unless you are new to The Dithering or you’ve been living under a rock for the past 6 months, you know that Helena Andrews’ first book, Bitch is the New Black: A Memoir, dropped on June 1 and is in bookstores everywhere (order it here!). To celebrate the release of the book, Andrews, Harper Collins, and The Root hosted her launch party on the rooftop of Room & Board on 14th (yes, it was a furniture store, and yes it was fabulous! If you’re looking to redefine your home as contemporary chic, this is your store!)
The party was AMAZING! DC’s young professionals, Capitol Hill movers and shakers, and even Frances and Gina from California came out in droves to celebrate Helena’s success. Sipping on wine from the open bar and relaxing in the gorgeous patio furniture out on Romm & Board’s southern-style wrap-around rooftop deck, we all mixed and mingled and munched hors d’oeuvres.
And then it was time for the lady of the hour to speak:
She thanked us all for our support, re-announced that BITNB has been optioned by Shonda Rhimes to be made into a movie (!), and reminded us all that this book is for everyone. (Read my EXCLUSIVE review here). She is one woman with a story all her own, but her failures and success, quirks and vulnerabilities paint a picture that is so utterly human the reader has no choice but to relate to — and, dare I say, understand — who she is. And maybe you can learn a little more about yourself along the way.
After she thanked us, she passed the mic to her mother, Frances. Hilarity ensued:
I recall Ms. Frances saying that as a parent, you drop someone out of you after nine months and you just hope for the best, and Helena turned out pretty good! The crowd loved her, and she loved that mic!
But, of course, my favorite part of any party is the swag bag! And Helena hooked us up right:
~A diamond-studed, divalicious 2 oz. shot glass from Santa Barbara Design Studio
~A hoodia-infused lip plumper (for “Huge Lips and Skinny Hips”) from Purple Lab make-up
~A red velvet creamy piece of perfection from Georgetown Cupcake
~Ruby red slippers (they even had my size 10! PROPS for that!)
~Mango Melange Shea Souffle by Carol’s Daughter
~ A gift card to the Skin Beauty Lounge on the Hill
~ A gift card to Picaboo
~A gift card to Creme Cafe and Lounge on U Street
~A gift card to Ben’s Chilli Bowl on U Street

Thanks for posting this review!! I was so sad that I wouldn’t be back in DC in time for this event but thanks to this recap I *almost* feel like I was there. That gift bag? Sounds like the ultimate in all things fabulous. 🙂
I read this book over the weekend and I was left confused as to what all the drama about it was. It is a *brief* peek into Helena’s adult life, filled with bad choices, dumb mistakes, one close to home tragedy, and two really good girlfriends. DUDE! lol!! Once I understood where she was going, I totally loved it. Can’t WAIT to see the movie! Can I be Adrienne? lol!!
I missed this:( I’ve read a couple of the articles written about her and the book and was really anticipating it’s release and reading it…but then I bought the book- I had already predetermined I’d fall in love immediately or instantly see myself- and once I started reading I was kinda lost. So I put it down in order to read my book club pic- The Help. Helena’s book is very well written, but maybe I need to keep reading and get kinda “over the hump”…to get to the meat and potatoes of the book. But I must say her background/childhood is very colorful and different, but one in which it seems she was allowed to truly express herself and come into her own. I wonder if I will have a different opinion about the read by the time I get to the last page.
