NY District Diva: Tamron Hall & Al Sharpton Events in NYC

I’ve officially been in NYC for one week today and I could not have had a better, more empowering week!
On Wednesday night, young professional women from all over NYC gathered at The Open House Gallery in Manhattan for The Root’s annual “Young, Fabulous & Female” panel and networking event. Moderated by the untouchably fabulous Tamron Hall (of MSNBC’s NewsNation with Tamron Hall), the panel consisted of Beverly Bond (founder of Black Girls Rock), Marjora Carter (principal of Marjora Carter Group, LLC), Demetria Lucas (author, A Belle in Brooklyn), and Pamela Abalu (head of Global Design and Construction for MetLife).
The ladies of the panel debunked the myth that Black women do not help each other in the workplace, recounting a plethora of Black women who continue to mentor and propel them to their highest heights. They also provided suggestions for how to find your passions, with Lucas saying “Figure out what you enjoy doing and figure out how to make money off of it. Work should be fun. You should enjoy doing it.”
They also discussed their definitions of success, with Carter saying, “Success is knowing your own power and using it for good (and not evil).” Carter also encouraged the women in the audience to “be brave,” when pursuing passions and to have high expectations for yourself, because “nobody rises to low expectations.” All things considered, Carter says, “we are the most important factor in our success.”

On Thursday night, more fabulous people descended on The Hudson Terrace to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Rev. Al Sharpton’s MSNBC show, “PoliticsNation“. Hosted by MSNBC President Phil Griffin, guests included Congressman Charlie Rangel (who I had the most HILARIOUS conversation with in the elevator), Tamron Hall, Professor Michael Eric Dyson, and many more. Congratulations, Rev. Al!
