Brooke Obie Interviews Iconic Filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood
“For her entire career, the Hollywood powers that be have constantly told Gina Prince-Bythewood one story: her critically acclaimed films, which center Black women and the stories of marginalized people (like Love & Basketball and Beyond the Lights), don’t travel well overseas.
Now the award-winning director’s latest project, The Old Guard, is a big-budget Netflix hit that has crossed several seas, landing in 191 countries on the same day.
“That’s amazing to me,” Prince-Bythewood tells Shondaland of the film’s global release. “I’m excited.”
Based on Greg Rucka’s and Leandro Fernández’s graphic novel of the same name, The Old Guard — starring Charlize Theron as Andy, an ancient immortal warrior, and Kiki Layne as Nile, a woman who just discovered her immortality — continues to hold the number one spot on Netflix since its July 10 release. The film, which has been garnering strong reviews from critics and fans alike, made Prince-Bythewood the first Black woman to helm a comic book movie — and potentially a franchise.”
