Jesus Doesn't Need Help, Either
I was overwhelmed by the stats and Facebook “likes” on a post I published in passing and probably the shortest post I’ve written yet, “Before You Go See The Help.” Though a much smaller number than those who agreed with the post, I was also interested to hear from the Black women who came for my neck publicly and privately over my posting of the Association of Black Women Historian’s open letter urging everyone to recognize the historical inaccuracies they found in the portrayal of Black women in the book and film. I also received a few offers to either pay for my ticket to see The Help or to loan me the book so I can get in on how awesome it is.
I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE HELP. With all of the soldiers out there on the front lines for author Kathryn Stockett, she doesn’t need my $30 to see the movie and buy the book, either. I have no interest in being a part of that experience. That won’t change. What I care about are these awesome young Black women who are out here telling their own stories and breaking down barriers unfathomable by some, by publishing their own books, producing their own movies and making their art available to the masses any way they can. Check out this month’s Prototype, Issa Rae, creator of “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.”
And what I most care about is telling as many people I can about how transformative a real relationship with Christ is. I care about people handing out copies of the Bible in 21st century language to let people in how awesome the Word of God is. I care about people squealing over how much better life is when we’re in right-standing with God and how beneficial it is for us to live a life that pleases Him. That’s what I want to spend an afternoon talking about.
Whether you feel compelled to or not, Christ doesn’t need to be defended. Christ doesn’t need or even desire us to get into debates about Him or to force our belief in Him onto others. He is who He is irrespective of what people believe. He doesn’t need us to praise Him or worship Him or honor Him with our thoughts, deeds, or lives. But oh! What a glorious thing it is to praise, worship and honor He who loved us so much that He laid down His life so that we could be saved. And oh! What a more worthy topic of discussion. Anybody wanna talk about Jesus?

O Lord my God,
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all
The works Thy Hand hath made,
I see the stars,
I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy pow’r throughout
The universe displayed;
Then sings my soul,
My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art!
How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul,
My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art!
How great Thou art!
you know i do! 🙂

Amen Sister!…our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ is good all of the time!! Personally I was just disinterested in seeing, or supporting a lukewarm movie such as “The Help”…maybe I’ll catch it on DVD eventually…maybe. God bless you.

That was awesome!!! I’m not the only one who feels that way…
You’re not alone, Anyka!
