The Wisdom Prayer

We are the most arrogant people! We think we know best what to do with our own lives, we think we can handle any and every situation ourselves, and we think we got to where we are based on our own genius and cleverness. But the smartest among us with the most technology still cannot even predict the weather (still waiting on that DC Christmas snow storm!) let alone control it. Wrapped in our human limitations, our knowledge and understanding will always fail. We are broken people, and we look to ourselves to fix our own brokenness, or we look to other broken people to fix what is broken in us when they cannot even fix themselves.

Knowing this — accepting this — why would I choose to try and fix myself when there are broken parts to me that I can’t even see and don’t even know about? Why would I choose this, when there is One who sees every broken piece, makes all crooked places straight and rough places smooth, soothes every doubt and calms every fear? Why would I choose my own path, when there is One who already knows how my story will end?  Why would I choose to drive off the cliff I can’t see, when I could allow a driver who sees everything to steer me towards safety and perfect peace?

I choose to yield my travel plans to the One who wrote the map. To the Author of my fate, I choose to surrender my life story. I lay my limited earthly knowledge at the feet of God and exchange it for His wisdom and understanding. His thoughts are so far above my thoughts, and His ways are so far above my ways. Today, I choose to aim higher than my limitations can take me. And whichever heights I have obtained and will attain, I owe all to Christ who has kept me safe in spite of my best attempts at danger, kept me motivated in my most slothful moments, and enabled me to succeed so far beyond what my wildest imaginations could conjure.

Today, I’m replacing my arrogance with praise, worship, and submission to the most High God, who is so mighty and awesome and worthy of all praise.  As my daily acknowledgment, I’ve taken these scriptures on God’s wisdom and ordered them in my very own Wisdom Prayer. I hope it blesses you as it has blessed me.

The Wisdom Prayer

I will say in a loud voice, Deserving is the Lamb, Who was sacrificed, to receive all the power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and majesty and blessing! Revelation 5: 12

O Lord, how many and varied are Your works! In wisdom have You made them all; the earth is full of Your riches and Your creatures. Psalm 104: 24

God, You made the earth by Your power; You established the world by Your wisdom and by Your understanding and skill stretched out the heavens. Jeremiah 10: 12

To You Who by wisdom and understanding made the heavens, for Your mercy and loving-kindness endure forever. Psalm 136: 5

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unfathomable are Your judgments And how untraceable are Your ways! Romans 11: 33

In You all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge and enlightenment are stored up and lie hidden. Colossians 2: 3

With the aged is wisdom, and with length of days comes understanding. But [only] with You are [perfect] wisdom and might; You [alone] have [true] counsel and understanding. Job 12: 12-13

He who leans on, trusts in, and is confident of his own mind and heart is a [self-confident] fool, but he who walks in skillful and godly Wisdom shall be delivered. Proverbs 28: 26

For this world’s wisdom is foolishness with God, for it is written, You lay hold of the wise in their [own] craftiness. 1 Corinthians 3:19

For it is written, You will baffle and render useless and destroy the learning of the learned and the philosophy of the philosophers and the cleverness of the clever and the discernment of the discerning; You will frustrate and nullify [them] and bring [them] to nothing. 1 Corinthians 1: 19

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. James 3: 17(NKJV)

For the Lord gives skillful and godly Wisdom; from Your mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6

If any of you is deficient in wisdom, let him ask of the giving God [Who gives] to everyone liberally and ungrudgingly, without reproaching or faultfinding, and it will be given him. James 1: 5

How much better it is to get skillful and godly Wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver. Proverbs 16: 16

He who gains Wisdom loves his own life; he who keeps understanding shall prosper and find good. Proverbs 19: 8

Behold, You desire truth in the inner being; make me therefore to know wisdom in my inmost heart. Psalm 51:6

Give me understanding, that I may keep Your law; yes, I will observe it with my whole heart. Psalm 119:34

Give me skillful and godly Wisdom and understanding. Do not let me forget or turn back from the words of my mouth. Proverbs 4: 5

And I make [special] request for all those around me: family, friends co-workers and acquaintances, [asking] that they may be filled with the full knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and in understanding and discernment of spiritual things.
Colossians 1: 9

In the name of Jesus I pray,

Amen.

What an awesome post reminding all of us of who is ultimately in charge of our lives. A great reminder that though we are responsible for the decisions and outcome of our lives God is the ultimate ruler, doctor, lawyer, peacemaker, Savior, Author, and finisher of our faith, the One who can turn our sad and wounded souls into lively stones ready to produce a burning fire that can take on the world piece by piece, person by person with our testimonies of God’s grace and His unbelievable mercy to us. What a wonderful post. I’m continually asking God for skillful wisdom and understanding from above that I may know His will for my life.Thanking God right now for your insight and for sharing it with the world!
